Amcor Rigid Plastics has joined 'The Recycling Partnership', an industry-funded program designed to increase residential recycling in the US.
The program is also supported by Alcoa Foundation, American Chemistry Council, American Forest & Paper Association, and the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers.
Coca-Cola, Ball, Carton Council, Society of the Plastics Industry and Sonoco Products are the other members, which are supporting the program, designed to leverage one-time private investments with public funding in a bid to back recycling in several cities of the country.
Amcor Rigid Plastics president Mike Schmitt said the program, which brings together all parts of the packaging value chain, has the ability to rapidly scale recycling efforts across the nation.
"Product stewardship is a key focus area within Amcor's sustainability strategy and we see investment in the Recycling Partnership as one way for us to enable higher recycling rates in the U.S.," Schmitt added.
According to Amcor, the partnership has already selected initial partner cities for the first round of funding.
Targeting four key areas, comprising recycling access, champion building, regional coordination, and education and outreach, the parners are said to receive technical as well as financial assistance.
In December 2013, The Recycling Partnership has been established following an industry stakeholder meeting which was convened by the Southeast Recycling Development Council (SERDC).
Australia-based Amcor produces plastic packaging for the food, beverage, spirits, personal or home care and healthcare industries.
The company has 61 facilities in 13 countries and operates in around 40 countries with more than 180 sites.
