Apotex issued an urgent recall of its birth-control pill Alysena 28 over packaging issue

Canadian pharmaceutical company Apotex has issued an urgent recall of its birth-control pill Alysena 28 over packaging issue.

The company found that instead of three tablets, one lot of the contraceptive may have been packed mistakenly with only two weeks of drug-containing tablets.

According to Apotex, the 28-day blister packs of Alysena should include 21 active birth-control pills and additionally seven placebo tablets, instead the packs in the affected lot LF01899A may contain 14 placebo pills as well as 14 active contraceptive tablets.

The pill which is packed incorrectly would not give the proper amount of contraceptive to women and is expected to increase the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy.

The product is sold in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, P.E.I. and Quebec.
