Biodegradable packaging manufacturer EcoCortec is set to participate in an international Marine Clean Project, 'Marine debris removal preventing further litter entry', which aims to prevent hazardous environmental impact of conventional plastic materials discarded at sea.
Sponsored by CIP Eco-Innovation Program, the €1.1m project also aims to promote sustainability and new technologies.
As a production partner for flexible packaging, EcoCortec is participating in the project, which deals with decreasing marine litter, a dangerous ecological problem that is growing rapidly.
In the framework of the project, the company introduced EcoOcean material, which is claimed to be completely marine biodegradable.
The heat and moisture resistant EcoOcean will biodegrade by anaerobic digestion in marine, natural soil and water environments, backyard composting systems as well as municipal composting facilities.
According to the company, EcoOcean film products are said to be developed completely taking the environment into consideration and contain 77% of biobased content.
EcoOcean is suitable for compostable bags and many flexible film packaging applications.
The project's key aspect is to influence change of policies within EU, so as to cut down pollution and develop new technological platform for environmentally friendly products and practices.
