According to the report, a “senior Whitehall source” said that the government is convinced that branding is a key factor in why young people start to smoke. The source added that the legislation will follow Australia’s new law on plain packaging, which is claimed to deter young smokers.
The news follows New Zealand’s announcement that it will put all tobacco products in plain packaging. The law change will be introduced later this year. Brand names will be printed in standard font type and sizes.
Australia has already forged ahead with plain tobacco packaging and introduced its law at the end of last year.
