LED packaging service provider Everlight Electronics has obtained orders for 3014 packaged mid- and low-power LED chips for lighting from Philips, with shipments to begin in 2015, according to industry sources.
Philips chose two China-based LED packaging houses and Everlight as suppliers of 3014 packaged LED chips, the sources said. However, Philips set a quote of US$0.012 per chip, much lower than current prices of US$0.025-0.030, and therefore Everlight faces a challenge to reduce production costs, the sources indicated.
Everlight is expanding its monthly packaging capacity from 3.4 billion chips to 4.2 billion units and will complete the expansion at the end of 2014, the company said. With order visibility of only 1.5 months, consolidated revenues for the fourth quarter of 2014 are expected to drop about 10% sequentially, Everlight indicated.
