A Low-Cost Tablet Starting at $230 with a 7-Inch Screen and Google's Android 4.1 OS

Acer on Thursday announced a low-cost tablet starting at $230 with a 7-inch screen and Google's Android 4.1 OS, code-named Jelly Bean.

The Iconia Tab A110 weighs 453 grams and provides up to 7.5 hours of battery life. It joins a growing list of low-cost tablets with small screens including Google's Nexus 7 and the soon-to-ship Amazon Kindle Fire HD, which are both priced at $199.

Acer's tablet announcement also comes a few days ahead of Apple's expected launch on Tuesday of a new iPad, which may come with a smaller screen. Acer is also expected to start shipping tablets based on Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 later this month.

The Iconia Tab A110 will display images at a resolution of 1024 by 600 pixels, which falls short of the 1280 by 800 pixels resolution on Google's tablet. But with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 8GB of storage and Jelly Bean, the Iconia Tab A110 shares many features with the $199 Google Nexus 7.

The Acer tablet has some additional features including a camera, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 and a micro-HDMI port to connect the tablet to high-definition TVs. The tablet will ship starting on Oct. 30 in the U.S. and Canada. The company could not be immediately reached for comment on the tablet's worldwide availability.
