Container refrigeration machinery supplier Daikin Reefer has launched a new Active CA device that helps in creating a controlled atmosphere (CA) inside refrigerated containers transporting perishable goods.
The device helps in slowing down the process of ageing of food products and other perishable items during transportation.
Owing to this, products can be transported in better condition, preserved for longer periods of time and also help in extending their shelf life.
Based on vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA), the technology creates the ideal atmosphere for the products quickly. It uses the mineral adsorbent zeolite to capture large quantities of nitrogen and transfer it into the reefer container which leads to the dilution of oxygen without the need for additional gas.
The Active CA system controls the temperature inside a reefer container during transit and will be exhibited by Daikin at the upcoming Intermodal Asia show to be hosted in Shanghai.
Along with an automatic ventilation control, the system uses cargo respiration to maintain the container's carbon dioxide level which makes it easy-to-use and economical.
Daikin used the design of its oxygen concentrator that had been developed for use in the medical industry for designing the unit's oxygen-conserving LiteTEC-5X component.
The company has made the system compact to ensure ease and speed of installation on refrigerated container units.
Daikin has already supplied an international shipping line with 50 of the new machines and will fit them on the reefer containers from the end of February 2015.
