Florida Institute Announces The Finalization of a Funding Agreement with US Bioplastics

Non-profit organization the Florida Institute for Commercialization of Public Research has announced the finalization of a funding agreement with US Bioplastics.

Gatoresin, a product from the Orlando-based US Bioplastics' is based on technology that is licensed from the University of Florida and has been designed to be used in highly disposable applications.

The bio-renewable, water-degradable plastic is said to avoid contamination of the environment by replacing non-degradable petroleum-based plastic.

The replacement will be done with materials that are obtained from agricultural as well as other waste products.

Institute chief executive officer Jamie Grooms said US Bioplastics is tackling one of the major issues pertaining to how to protect the health and sustainability of the environment.

"Working with environmentally conscious partners, US Bioplastics is offering a viable alternative to a large segment of oil-based, non-degradable plastics, and is creating a new, clean industry that will benefit Florida and the global community for generations to come," Grooms added.

US Bioplastics founder Lee Strait said by partnering with its network of business partners and vendors, the company is taking existing waste streams and coupling them with its bio-renewable, water-degradable polymer formulas to address plastic contamination in the environment.

"US Bioplastics recognizes the importance of caring for the environment while preserving the health of people through responsible product manufacturing and development," Strait added.

The Institute for Commercialization of Public Research works in partnership with the technology licensing and commercialization offices of Florida's state universities and private research institutions.
