Indonesian Cigarette Manufacturers Starts Printing Graphic Health Warnings on The Packs

Indonesian cigarette manufacturers have started printing graphic health warnings on the packs, as the law related to it came into force in the country.

Indonesia Introduces Pictorial Warnings on Cigarette Packaging

To reduce the habit of smoking, specifically among youth, Indonesia has introduced the new regulation, which requires display of pictorial health warnings on cigarette packs.

In order to curb smoking, a government regulation was issued in 2012 stating that graphic health warnings should be displayed on at least 40% of cigarette packaging.

According to the National Commission on Tobacco Control, out of over 3,800, only six cigarette products feature the health warnings.

In 2012, Australia introduced strict rules for cigarette packaging, which includes graphic photos on plain brown packs without highlighting any branding or logos.

Since 1 December 2012, all forms of branding logos, colors, and promotional texts on cigarette packets in Australia are banned from pack designs.

They were replaced with brown packets and graphic images of smoking-related images to reduce the smoking population of the country to 10% by 2018 from 15% in 2012.

Ireland, New Zealand and Britain are some of the countries, which have also implemented similar measures to reduce smoking.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), tobacco is responsible for around six million deaths annually, and by 2030 the figures are expected to increase to eight million.
