The Government of Maharashtra Is Giving a Major Thrust to The Textile Sector

The Government of Maharashtra is giving a major thrust to the textile sector, state Principal Secretary (Textile) Manoj Saunik has said.

Addressing a FICCI-Invest In Maharashtra meet in Hyderabad, Mr. Saunik said out of the about 8.8 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg) of cotton produced in the state, only around 2 million bales are consumed within the state, and the remaining cotton goes outside the state, which indicates the state’s potential in the textile sector.

Mr. Saunik said the Maharashtra government is giving a major thrust on the textile sector and it has unveiled a new policy aimed at attracting investments up to Rs. 400 billion and creating 1.1 million jobs in the textile sector by 2017.

During the past three years, the Maharashtra government has already received investment proposals of around Rs. 100 billion, under the new policy, he informed.

Assuring industrialists of uninterrupted power supply, Principal Secretary (Industries) Apurva Chandra, said Maharashtra has become a power-surplus state. He said power tariff in the state may be a bit costly at Rs. 8.50 per unit, but given the quality of power supply, industries are willing to pay the rate.
