DS Smith Packaging has announced the opening of a new ‘clean room’ manufacturing facility at its Wellingborough plant in Northamptonshire for the packaging of foods, pharmaceuticals and electronics products.
The new purpose-built plant, which is already producing baking trays, has full British Retail Consortium (BRC)/ Institute of Packaging (IOP) High Risk Global Standard food accreditation, packagingeurope.com reported.
DS Smith's new facility, when it is at full capacity, uses 192 solar panels which are claimed to generate energy for 50% of the company's total power consumption.
The insulation value of the new structure has a range of features to ensure hygiene integrity and cut down cross contamination risks.
The UK-based company supplies corrugated packaging products and related services.
