Global in 2015 will double those in 2014, but the corresponding production value will increase only 30% due to estimated price drops of 30-35%, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.
Europe will account for 23% of the global LED lighting market in 2015, China 21% and the US 19%, the sources said. Global LED lighting shipment value in 2015 will reach US$25.7 billion, taking up 31.3% of total lighting shipment value, the sources cited LEDinside estimates as indicating.
In contrast to LED lighting, global demand for LED backlighting is on the decline, the sources said. This is mainly because fewer LED chips are used to backlight LCD TVs. For example, the number of LED chips used in 32-inch direct-type backlighting LCD TVs has dropped to 12-14, the sources indicated.
In addition to decreasing use of LED chips, prices for backlighting LED chips are falling. For example, quotes for a 7020 LED package used in edge-type backlighting of LCD TVs have slipped by about 6% in the fourth quarter and those for a 3528/3030 LED packages used in direct-type backlighting by about 10%, the sources said.
