South African packaging company Nampak has acquired ownership of the Alucan beverage can plant situated in Agbara, Nigeria.
The plant, which has the capacity to manufacture one billion cans per annum, supplies beverage cans for beer and carbonated soft drinks.
Said to be the sole owner and operator, Nampak will initially operate the plant under the name Alucan Packaging trading as Nampak Bevcan Nigeria.
Nampak incoming CEO André de Ruyter said the acquisition will play a crucial role in the company's African growth strategy.
"Working with our multinational customers, we are excited about participating in the high economic growth rates experienced in Nigeria to satisfy increasing consumer demand for high-quality packaging products across the African continent," Ruyter added.
According to Nampak, Alucan operates an eight color, two-piece single aluminum beverage can-making line in Agbara, Lagos.
Once demand has grown as is expected, the plant can accommodate a second line, doubling its capacity to two billion cans a year.
Nampak has operations in 12 African countries at present.
