Jospak Unveils Fiber-Based Tray to Pack Easily Perishable Food Products

Finnish startup Jospak has introduced a new high-barrier fiber-based tray suitable for different food products.

The new tray is claimed to keep food products that are easily perishable fresh while having minimal impact on the environment.

Jospak’s tray comprises a fiber-based tray and comes with a separate multi-layer barrier film and has 85 % less plastic than a routine plastic alternative.

It is hermetically sealed with lidding film. This, in turn makes the tray appropriate for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP).

After consuming the food product, the consumer can simply peel away the inner film liner and discard the materials in waste streams or recycle, said the 2014-founded Jospak.

Jospak managing director Tarja Heikkilä said: “We have recognized the sustainable trends both in the food and in the packaging industry and want to be a part of the circular economy.

“Our vision is that Jospak tray is the preferred packaging for sustainable food industry enhancing the customer brand recognition and helping to reduce food and material waste.”

The Finnish company has launched three size variants of the tray to accommodate common volumes for diverse food products as well as ready-made meal portions.

Jospak claims that the food tray made from fiber offers sufficient printable surface opening up better means for brand and product awareness besides having other benefits like digitalization, shelf visibility, and standing out from the competition.

The new tray also helps in staying away from using additional stickers and paperboard sleeves. Thereby, it is claimed to cut down on packaging materials and associated costs overall.

Currently, Jospak is carrying out the pilot phase of the tray. It is developing the technical functionalities to meet the conventional plastic trays, and looking for the most appropriate food product segments for a commercial launch.
