Food packaging manufacturer in the US, Sealed Air has selected Milliken’s Millad NX 8000 clarifier for its new range of lightweight thermoformed Cryovac lidded trays and pots for meats, salads and other fresh produce.
With its new choice, Sealed Air will help food processors benefit from the reduced packaging weight and lower carbon footprint of PP compared to alternative materials. It has also benefited from processing advantages in its production chain.
The recyclable PP packaging has low density and is 10 - 30% lighter. It has a 24% lower carbon footprint compared to APET.
The Cryovac containers from Sealed Air are non-brittle and break without sharp edges. The heat resistance of PP trays and containers allows them to be reheated and also laminated in heat-sealing machinery without cracking or warping.
PP is straightforward to separate from other materials in the recycling chain and lends itself to re-use as food packaging or through energy recovery.
Milliken Plastic Additives EMEA marketing and sales manager Sami Palanisami said PP helps food producers create a fresh-look for packaged foods.
"It also brings the valuable environmental advantage of lighter packaging with a low carbon footprint during production and transportation, achieving a combination of benefits that is not possible with other materials," Palanisami said.
The new generation Millad NX 8000 clarifier is easy to process, which adds to its achievement in raising the clarity standard of Sealed Air's polypropylene applications for the food sector.
Milliken provided technical support to help Sealed Air achieve optimum clarity and offer the food industry a packaging alternative to support producers in meeting the UK and European guidelines regarding reduction in packaging weight, waste and CO2 emissions.
