Silgan Holdings Acquired All Assets of US-Based Metal Container Manufacturers

Rigid packaging manufacturer Silgan Holdings has acquired all the assets of US-based metal container manufacturers Van Can Company for about $40m.

The transaction included the sale of two metal container manufacturing facilities.

While Silgan Holdings produces rigid packaging for shelf-stable food and other consumer goods products, Van Can produces steel containers for seafood, poultry, pet food, and other non-food applications.

Silgan Holdings which operates close to 89 manufacturing facilities in North and South America, Europe and Asia recorded annual net sales of about $3.7bn in 2013.

The company supplies metal containers in North America and Europe and is also a worldwide supplier of metal, composite and plastic closures for food and beverage products. It also produces plastic containers for shelf stable food and personal care products in North America.

The Van Can Company came into being in 1992. In 2000, the company opened a plant in Lancaster to cater to the demands of customers in the Southeast and on the East Coast.

As of 2005, Van Can has reduced its reliance on the tuna industry and has expanded into markets including the poultry, chaffing dish heat, and other niche markets. The company produces these cans based on the client's demands.
