Fiber-based packaging supplier Evergreen Packaging has entered into an intellectual property license agreement with Smart Planet Technologies to explore the development of cupstock products using EarthCoating technology.
EarthCoating technology is a mineralized barrier coating for paperboard materials. The mineralized resins are coatings, which contain less plastic compared to traditional low-density polyethylene coatings.
According to Smart Planet, trial work and pilot testing are scheduled for the third quarter of 2013.
Heat-sealable EarthCoating resins are said to be FDA-compliant for direct food contact.
Evergreen Packaging vice president of North American Operations Bob Shanahan said the company focuses on product innovations using less plastic and packaging materials.
"Working with Smart Planet Technologies will help us in our innovation efforts to reduce the amount of plastic used in our products and support our sustainability initiatives," Shanahan added.
