Most households in Europe are now buying energy saving lamps, according to a survey by the Energy Saving Trust.

In a survey of 5,000 consumers in 12 different countries in Europe, Italy came out on top with 96 per cent of consumers always or often purchasing CFL energy saving light bulbs. For the UK the figure was 88 per cent.

Sweden topped the survey for the percentage of people always or often buying LED lamps at 46 per cent, with the UK coming in behind Sweden, Austria, Portugal, German and Spain at 33 per cent.

Figures from the Energy Saving Trust show the UK could save up £1.4 billion on electricity bills a year through households replacing incandescent and halogen bulbs with energy-saving light bulbs (CFLs and LED spots). The savings would add up to around £50 per household, per year.

The Trust is also part of the Europe-wide PremiumLight project, which aims to educate the public about the different types of energy saving lamps.
