The all-new Volvo XC90 has been teased for the first time ahead of its long-awaited 2014 launch.
Volvo presented a series of revealing sketches of the second-generation luxury SUV at the unveiling of its striking Concept Coupe showpiece that embodies the brand’s new medium-/large-car design language.
The images, captured by Swedish publication Feber, uncover key elements of the new Volvo XC90, highlighting its front end, tail-lights and centre console design.
The 2014 XC90 shows clear links to the Concept Coupe, incorporating its T-shaped LED daytime running lights embedded in the headlight clusters, prominent radiator grille and angular bumper lines.
The concept’s C-shaped LED tail-lights make the transition from show car to production design, with the rear-end teaser image confirming the XC90 will retain the pillar-mounted lamp layout of the original.
The Concept Coupe’s distinctive portrait-aligned central infotainment screen will also feature in the production XC90, flanked by vertical air vents and underpinned by a clean and simple control panel.
The 2014 Volvo XC90 will become the first model from the car maker to ride on its versatile new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform when it launches towards the end of next year.
The extensive use of aluminium throughout the XC90’s chassis, front structure, doors and powertrains and the switch to the new ‘Drive-E’ four-cylinder engine family will contribute to a weight saving of up to 150kg over the outgoing model, which in return promises benefits in fuel consumption, performance and vehicle dynamics.
The new Volvo XC90 is expected to reach our shores around the first quarter of 2015, four to six months after its international unveiling.
