Pomace Has Been Dried and Grounded and Was Used to Make Edible Coatings and Films

US researchers have converted the pulp derived from crushed wine grapes into a biodegradable packaging solution.

The researchers at Oregon State University in the US revealed that the pulp, which comprises stems, skins and seeds and is known as pomace, is packed with dietary fiber and phenolics.

In order to create edible and non-edible products, pomace has been dried and grounded and was used to make edible coatings and films.

The materials, which contain antioxidants, seal in moisture and control the growth of some bacteria, can be stretched over fruits, vegetables and other food products.

Biodegradable boards were also made using pomace, which in turn can be molded into containers, serving trays and flowerpots.
