Changing an HID Light Bulb Is Not The Same as Changing a Normal Light Bulb

Changing an HID light bulb is not the same as changing a normal light bulb. HID, or high-intensity discharge, bulbs use metallic salts that are vaporized within the bulb. These types of lights produce more light per level of power consumption than ordinary light bulbs. Because of this light's intensity it burns extremely hot. Therefore one must take more care when changing an HID light bulb. Instructions 1) Leave the light fixture off for at least 30 minutes before touching the HID bulb to change it. These bulbs take much longer to cool than traditional bulbs so to avoid injury let the bulb cool completely. 2) Remove the tempered glass covering, if applicable. Not all fixtures will have this component, but if yours does, remove the screws or clasps that hold the cover on and remove it from the fixture. 3) Unscrew the HID bulb in a counterclockwise motion using a towel or cloth glove to remove it. Never handle these bulbs without a hand covering as oils can damage the overall light fixture. Some areas have recycling programs for this kind of bulb. Check local regulations for details and dispose of the light in approved fashion. 4) Screw the new bulb into your fixture with a clockwise motion, again using a towel or glove. HID bulbs are fragile so be careful when inserting not to over-twist. 5) Reattach any glass covering and turn on light to test. Leave the light on for at least 30 minutes the first time.
