Lextar Globally Applied for More Than 500 Patents in 2012

Lextar Electronics applied with the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs for 174 patents of which 125 ones were invention patents (the other two types of patents are utility and design) in 2012, with each total being the most among Taiwan-based LED chip makers or packaging houses or LED lighting makers, according to TIPO.

Lextar globally applied for more than 500 patents in 2012, more than three patents per R&D employee based on its R&D staff of 140 members, company chairman David Su pointed out. With the incentives for innovation and R&D, Lextar has so far obtained and applied for nearly 1,400 patents, Su said.

As Lextar is engaged in production of LED epitaxial wafers and chips and packaging of LED chips for backlight and lighting applications, patents it has applied for cover LED epitaxial wafers and chips, packaging, lighting as well as manufacturing processes and control systems, Su indicated.

Lextar unveiled a number of technologies in 2012, including high-CRI (color rendering index of over 95) and high-efficiency LED lighting modules, high-voltage blue-ray LED chip packaging, 100W COB (chip on board) packaging, packaging of direct-type LED backlight, structural design for LED lighting tubes to fit automated production.

In addition to in-house R&D, Lextar has been cooperating in R&D of LED technologies with several universities in Taiwan.
