The City of Darwin is trialling a new street lighting project that they hope will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase light quality.
The Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim used a cherry picker to inspect the first of 26 LED lights being installed in Leanyer.
She says the lights will be tested over 12 months to see how they handle the Top End's tough weather conditions and to determine if a Darwin-wide rollout is economically viable.
"It will probably be a gradual rollout," she said.
"It's actually quite expensive to install new lights and LED light systems but in the long run it provides us with a whole bunch of savings in terms of the length of time the lights are available, the brightness of the lights and in fact carbon emissions."
