The German Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ern hrung (BLE – The Federal Agency for Food and Agriculture), which functions as the competent authority for the implementation of the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) in Germany, has already carried out checks on two importers since the regulation came into effect on 3 March. A third company is to be subjected to a check this week and at the beginning of May two further checks have been scheduled. Controls have been introduced considerably earlier than had been expected by the branch. The import trade had assumed that there would be a certain period of grace immediately following the taking-effect of the regulation.
