Packaging company in the US, MeadWestvaco’s (MWV) medication adherence solution Shellpak Renew has bagged the Best Sustainable Pharmaceutical Packaging award at the CPhI Worldwide event in Madrid, Spain.
The Shellpak Renew, launched in April 2012 was adapted based on customer research to deliver key patient improvements including decreased weight and size and including an environmentally-friendly, curbside recyclable outer carton.
Shellpak Renew contains color-coded spine labels to help differentiate among drugs, easy-open, child-resistant push buttons and an integrated calendar that helps patients track medication usage.
It also provides a 40% weight reduction over the original Shellpak and has an outer carton made of Natralock, an eco-friendly paperboard that increases the use of recyclable materials and minimizes waste.
MWV Healthcare Secondary and Adherence Packaging Division vice president and managing director John Grinnell said Shellpak Renew is a platform for an integrated medication adherence program designed based on patients' needs.
"With Shellpak Renew, we're able to provide this platform to our customers in an environmentally-friendly format," Grinnell said.
