Taiwan-based vendor Acer has cooperated with China-based IC designer SIM Technology to develop smartphones for launch in the China market in 2014, while Taiwan-based HTC and Asustek Computer are looking to work with SIM, and two other China-based firms, Longcheer Holdings and Wingtech, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.
Viewing that China-based vendors have dominated the China market by virtue of inexpensive smartphones with hardware specifications of quite high levels, Acer, HTC and Asustek are expected to rely on the China-based supply chain, including ODMs, to minimize production cost for entry-level and mid-range smartphone models to be launched in the China market, the sources analyzed.
