WRTL has won a contract to provide 58,000 LED luminaires throughout the streets of Sheffield as part of the City's Streets Ahead Project.

The project, which is being delivered by public service providers Amey, will see 2bn pound spent on improving the quality of Sheffield's roads. The outdated lighting system will be replaced with LED lanterns designed to eliminate light pollution, eradicating the orange glow which currently radiates above the city.

In addition to offering increased energy efficiency, the LED lamps will be more controllable so that the council can decrease light output in early morning hours to reduce energy consumption and residential disturbance.

Rachel Morris,of Amey, explained,"The wattage will vary,as a bespoke design solution is being created for each street, however the overall solution will lead to a reduction in energy consumption across the city following the core investment period."

The lamps, which will individually fit between 10 and 52 LED lights, will have a lifespan of 50 years. It is claimed that the project will reduce the city's electricity expenditure from 3m pound to 1.2m pound. The savings will be re-invested in the Streets Ahead project.
