Stationery Sales Increased by 23 Per Cent in June

Stationery sales increased by 23 per cent in June, according to a sales update from well-known newsgency owner and commentator Mark Fletcher.

"June got off to a good start and looks set to continue the trend of a good quarter so far," Fletcher said.

"The categories performing the best are those on which we focus attention," he added.

According to Fletcher, gifts were up 214 per cent, ink was up 91 per cent, stationery up 23 per cent, magazines up 12 per cent and cards up six per cent.

"We are thrilled that traffic is up six per cent yet sales are up 13 per cent. Our focus on deepening the basket is paying off.  We are also chasing balance across categories. For example, a year ago gifts accounted for 2.92 per cent of our sales. Today, they account for 9.66 per cent. We are wary of turning the newsagency into a gift shop and so are managing the growth within our goals," he said.

"Stationery sits at 7.85 per of sales, up from 7.18 per cent a year earlier. Ink is closer to where we want it at 7.55 per cent of sales, up from 3.41 per cent a year earlier," he said.
