It is learned that Indian major steelmakers are to enhance production capacity for another 24 million tons per year before financial year 2017-2018. According to the Steel Ministry, the state-owned SAIL will ramp up its capacity from current 12.8 million tons per year to 21.4 million tons; another state-run company RINL is close to complete its expansion to 7 million tons per year from current 3 million tons. Besides, the largest steelmaker in the country Tata Steel will increase its capacity from 14.3 million tons per year to 16.5 million tons, while Essar has just increased recently its capacity at its Hazira plant to 10 million tons per year. Steel Ministry’s data shows the current capacity of the 10 major steelmakers in the country stands at 54.5 million tons per year and it will eventually grow to 78.5 million tons by financial year 2018. Moreover, the capacity is expected to hit 200 million tons by financial year 2020 if the capacity of the secondary producers is counted.
