Philips Color Kinetics performed a colour test on the Empire State Building as it prepares to transition the building's tower lights to LEDs

Philips Color Kinetics is set to install an exterior LED lighting system for New York's Empire State Building.

Philips will replace the tower's 400 standard lamps with 1,200 LED fixtures. The lighting manufacturer has created a customised control system that will allow the building's staff to instantly change the LED colour schemes and effects and choose from a colour palette of more than 16 million shades.

The new fixtures will combine red, green, blue and white LED light sources. To create a range of effects, the LEDs can project saturated full-colour light and dimmable cool white light.

The lighting system, which according to Philips will reduce the Empire State Building's energy consumption by 73 per cent, will extend from the 72nd floor to the mast and is due to be completed by September 2012.
