New Rules for Gm Label on Packaged Food

The Indian Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has issued a Gazette Notification that mandates producers of packaged food to reveal the genetically-modified (GM) ingredients, in their product if used any.

The new rules help consumers to know whether the packaged foods they are purchasing have any GM ingredient. They are applicable to some 19 products such as biscuits, breads, cereals and pulses among others, thehindubusinessline.com reported.

Department of Consumer Affairs director Legal Metrology Dixit said, "The labelling will basically help inform the consumer about the presence of GM content in packaged food products."

The implementation of GM food labeling would be done by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which is yet to announce any rules for implementing the exercise.
