Benefits of LED Lighting Is Recognised by Indian Municipalities

In yet another example of private and public sector services recognising what can be gained by carrying out retrofit lighting projects, cities and municipalities across India are reaping the benefits of cost-effective, energy-efficient LED lighting.

This demonstrates that the 'LED revolution' sweeping across homes and businesses is far from a domestic phenomenon or even a Western one - people all over the world are jumping on the LED bandwagon and are feeling infinitely better for having done so.

Energy Live News reported how the Haldia Development Authority in West Bengal is now saving around 70,000 kilowatt hours worth of electricity and more than £5,893 on its energy bills thanks to the installation of some LED street lights.

Further data by The Climate Group - an independent, not-for-profit organisation working across the globe with government and commercial authorities - showed that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in West Bengal has slashed its energy usage by 52 per cent using the same technology. The Thane Municipal Corporation in Maharashtra has cut its electricity consumption by 47 per cent.

"The project is an excellent example of how cities can cut their costs in power consumption and make significant energy savings," commented Sanjay Wadvani, British deputy higher commissioner for Eastern India.

She went on to express hope that local authorities would look at these results and be inspired to incorporate similar technology in the infrastructure of their own regions, in a move both to fight against climate change and save unnecessary expenditure.

Accordingly, any businesses or homes which are still relying on power-guzzling, planet-destroying outdated lighting solutions might consider a retrofit project. Even just exchanging a few outdated wall lights with some LED ceiling spotlights would help not only to cut costs on electricity bills, but also to reduce emissions produced by the property.
