Tap into the right filler for your tub The type and location of your tub will determine your faucet options. Wall-mount spouts are the most common, especially in alcove tubs. Deck-mount taps fit into openings in the tub deck. Floor-mount faucets are usually paired with freestanding tubs. In addition to the style of the faucet, you'll want to consider the number and configuration of the handles. Single-handle faucets and those with paddle-shaped handles are considered the easiest to use. To maintain water at a safe and comfortable temperature, you'll want to install either a pressure balance valve (PBV) or a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV). The PBV prevents scalding (or freezing) when there is a drop in water pressure, such as when someone turns on the tap or flushes a toilet while you're in the tub or shower. A TMV blends hot and cold water to a pre-selected temperature. Although a TMV will be more expensive than a PBV, it offers an important advantage: You can set your water-heater temperature high enough to kill bacteria (140F), and have it delivered to the tap at safe and comfortable lower temperature (less than 120F). As for water savings, don't look for the WaterSense label on bathtub faucets anytime soon. "You need to fill a tub as rapidly as possible to preserve the heat in the water," says Lenora Campos, Ph.D. senior manager, public relations, for plumbing manufacturer TOTO. Source: lamorindaweb.com
