Castor wheels are the wheel device used for different type of industrial and household devices. The wheels come in various designs like compound, single, undriven and double. These are available in many sizes constructed of metal or heavy-duty components. Some configuration of castor and wheel are designed for rolling forward or backward only. However, wheel and caster are two different things combined for using one object. When both the words are said together, people may think it is a single thing. But there is difference in wheel and castor.
Wheels
Wheels are round object that can roll. The wheels rotate on an axle or shaft that is passed through the center of the wheel. The wheels are made with solid materials like, polyurethane, steel, V-groove, hard rubber, phenolic, polyolefin and nylon. Almost all the design of castor is made with one solid material rather than spoke designs. Spoke design castor are the one where the tire is molded into a material. Most of the wheels are molded with a steel core which the center part of wheel which support the tire. Wheels with solid cores are stronger than spokes at the center. Mostly the core of a molded wheel is made of different materials like aluminum, steel, iron, polyolefin and nylon. The tires that are molded into a core are made of rubbers or polyurethane.
Castor
Castor is a frame used with a wheel for making it move. The frame is called castor bracket or a fork that holds the wheel and allows alignment. The major part of a castor is a wheel and a frame. Castor is used on the wheel to make it roll on a straight path or with pivot mounted is such that align the wheel automatically to any direction for traveling. Caster is of two types, rigid and swivel.
Rigid
Rigid Castor is made of a wheel and a fork. A rigid castor is used primarily in a straight line travelling, means it allows the wheel to roll forward or backward direction only.
Swivel
It is almost same as rigid castor, swivel caster incorporates to a wheel mounted of forks, but a swivel is jointed above the fork allowing it to rotate at a 360 degree. That means a wheel with swivel castor allow the vehicle to easily move in any direction without even changing the orientation.
