Value City Furniture here donated about $78,000 worth of furniture last weekend to residents of Union City, N.J., whose homes were severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy.
Working with the Jewish Federation of Greater Metrowest New Jersey, the retailer invited 25 families to pick out furniture from a portion of the East Brunswick store that had been set aside for their use. The store also provided staff members to help load the merchandise into their vehicles or arrange for delivery, said Joseph Cracolici, a spokesman for the company.
Cracolici said the Union Beach area was one of the hardest-hit towns along the Jersey shore, and the retailer wanted to help those whose needs were the greatest.
The event received considerable coverage by local newspapers at least one television station. Click here to read a story in the New Jersey Jewish News.
