Nourison Sponsors Medical Clinic in Bhadohi, India

Nourison, a leading manufacturer of area rugs, broadloom and home accents, has partnered with Care and Fair to sponsor a medical clinic and dispensary in Bhadohi, India.

Working through the Oriental Rug Importers Association (ORIA) Children's Charitable Fund, Nourison will fund the clinic that provides both allopathic and homeopathic services. The facility includes three doctors chambers, a tuberculosis ward and a pathology room. Nourison is also sponsoring the equipment and construction of a new X-ray room at the clinic.

"We are pleased to give back to a community that is so vital to our industry," said Alex Peykar, principal at Nourison. "Improving the health and social conditions of weavers and their families is very important to us because, in addition to our own sense of social responsibility, their welfare and happiness is directly linked to the future of the handmade rug industry."

The clinic and dispensary currently provides medical services for approximately 45,000 patients from the region each year. It maintains a staff of three doctors as well as eight medical and administrative personnel.

Bhadohi is known as "Carpet City" in India and is home to the largest hand-knotted rug-weaving community in South Asia. Carpet weaving in the region dates back to the 16th century and is believed to have been established when some master weavers from Iran stopped there on their travels and taught some of the local people in Bhadohi their craft.
