AUSTIN, Texas — Motif Modern Living has filed for Chapter 7 liquidation bankruptcy, ending the contemporary retailer's relatively short run in San Antonio and Kyle, Texas, markets south of Austin.

The retailer, which closed its doors in May according to local reports, listed assets of $210,557 and debts of $2.2 million in the petition filed Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Austin.

Among its largest unsecured industry creditors are Zuo Modern, with a listed claim of $108,835; Palliser, $64,165; Diamond Sofa, with two claims totaling $39,634; Sitcom, $32,194; American Leather, $25,308; Tema Home, $24,847; and Furniture Resources, $24,214.

Owned and operated by Steven Lora and John Perez, Motif opened its 21,000-square foot Motif Furniture Outlet in Kyle in 2006, following in 2008 with a 20,500-square-foot San Antonio Motif Modern Living location, featuring a main showroom and attached Motif Studio.

At the time, Lora told Furniture/Today Motif's market "hasn't been that bad," despite reports of weak national economic conditions. The company was projecting a triple-digit sales increase in 2008 with the new store up and running.
