Rebar Is a Metal Rod That Provides Reinforcement to Concrete Structures

Rebar is a metal rod that provides reinforcement to concrete structures. The name itself literally shows this metal rod's purpose, as rebar is acronym for reinforcing bar. The most common use of rebar is to build concrete reinforcing structures. This metal rod improves the overall strength of such concrete reinforcing structures. Let us look at the properties of a rebar.

Ridges

Whenever the people see a piece of rebar, the first thing they notice is the curvy ridges running up and down on the entire metal rod. These ridges are for a purpose, and that purpose is to help the rod stay firm inside the concrete. When the molten concrete is poured, it spreads under and around the ridges. Once the concrete dries, it will secure the rod firmly, just like a screw in a wall. This provides a much more solid reinforcement than a rod, without ridges would provide. Besides, if a smooth rod were used, it would be pulled out of the dry concrete easily since such rod, would not have any grip at all.

Tensile Strength

Concrete mixture is strong in many aspects. However, the only thing that it does lacks is the tensile strength. Metal, especially stainless steel, on the other hand, does have excellent tensile strength. Stainless steel rebar cast inside concrete helps to increase the overall strength of the reinforcing structure. This is possible because the tensile strength of the stainless steel rebar helps to hold the reinforcing structure in place, where concrete alone would not be strong enough.

Stainless Steel

Traditional rebar was of carbon steel. However, facing the issue of corrosion, this carbon steel was soon replaced with this stainless metal. Today, rebar is most commonly manufactured using stainless steel. Ordinary steel is produced using iron and other common elements, but in stainless steel, a further addition of chromium, as well as molybdenum is made, which provides it stainless and corrosion resistant properties. Stainless steel rebar is strong, as well as corrosion resistant, providing excellent strength to the concrete structures for a long period of time.

Working

A working in a number of different ways is possible with a stainless rebar. It can be heated and bent so that a hook at the end of the rod can be created. This hook is helpful to lock the rebar around the concrete or other rebar. This stainless rod is also suitable for welding. To connect multiple rebars, welding is needed. In case where welding is not possible, the rebars are connected with each other using metal wires.
