Recent months have seen ups and downs in the partial sector of the furniture industry which is dependent on consumer business. Business which had still been described as unexpectedly good last summer mostly weakened at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2011. This was true for both the domestic market and export business to other European countries. Exceptions to the deteriorating trend were mainly seen among furniture manufacturers who benefited from the economic difficulties of other companies. Most partial sectors of the German furniture industry experienced unexpectedly strong order receipts in January. The furniture retail trade saw a strong revival in business, especially in the week after Christmas. The resulting orders manifested themselves in the home furnishings industry as early as the end of the company holidays at the beginning of January and strong demand persisted for the whole of the rest of the month.
