Celebrating Verner Panton by Anca on Feb 13. 2013 Our famous Designers
Born on 13th February 1926, furniture designer Verner Panton had a passion for bright colours and geometric patterns. He created brilliant products that to this day are added to interiors and are a source of inspiration for contemporary artists.
Bright colours, innovative shapes, unused materials and futuristic ideas – this is how Verner Panton‘s products can be characterised. Even if his style represents the ’60s, his creations are still manufactured by Vitra, for example. As the Design Museum’s website writes, the Cone Chair’s introduction in 1959 made Panton recognised for his distinctive style. The Cone was originally designed for Panton’s parents’ new restaurant on Fünen. For a magazine photography session, Panton put naked shop mannequins and models on the chairs, causing a small scandal. The Cone Chair also attracted attention in New York, after the police ordered that it be removed from a shop window where large crowds had gathered to see it. Heart Cone is a version of the Cone chair.
The plastic Panton Chair realised one of Panton’s fundamental objectives for the first time: a plastic chair as an inexpensive industrial product.
Amoebe Chair was originally dreamed up for Panton‘s famous Visiona installation. It is a marvellous example of close-to-the-floor lounge furniture and embodies the spirit of the early 1970s.
