New Coatings to Protect Monobloc Aerosol Cans and Aluminum and Plastic Tubes

PPG Industries’ packaging coatings business has announced that it will feature a new generation of coatings for the protection of monobloc aerosol cans and aluminum and plastic tubes during the Aerosol and Dispensing Forum in Paris, Feb. 4-5.

PPG’s new packaging coatings meet new requirements and provide enhanced performance solutions and benefits such as higher application solids and one-component simplification, according to Robyn McMillan, PPG global segment manager for monobloc aerosol cans and tubes coatings. “We’re making a positive impact in the cosmetic, personal care, dental, pharmaceutical, food and industrial markets by offering benefits that appeal to packaging manufacturers, brand owners and consumers,” she said.

The new range of coatings comprises Bisphenol A non-intent (BPA-NI, or with no BPA intentionally added) internal protective spray liners for monobloc aerosol cans and aluminum tubes, as well as BPA-NI ultraviolet-cured (UV-cured) varnishes formulated with photoinitiators other than Isopropyl thioxanthone (ITX) and Benzophenone to protect and decorate plastic tubes.

As part of this new generation of coatings, PPG has launched:

HOBA MAX (PPG8900) and HOBA VCL (PPG2845) internal liners for aluminum aerosol cans to protect a full range of standard- to high-aggressive cosmetic and personal-care filling goods such as deodorant, shave cream, hair mousse, hairspray, and sun-care products. The HOBA VCL (PPG2845) liner also is recommended to protect a wide range of food products, including beverage. These liners offer even greater protection for some filling products compared to traditional polyamide-imide (PAM) and epoxy-based coatings.

HOBA PPG4880 gold-internal liners for aluminum tubes are BPA-NI and suitable for low- to neutral-pH and fatty products such as food (mustard, mayonnaise and horseradish), pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and personal-care products. HOBA PPG4990 internal liners are BPA-NI and provide resistance to a broad range of alkaline products including hair dyes, hair mousse and goods containing ammonia.

HOBA PPG3270 gloss and HOBA PPG3280 matt BPA-NI, ITX-free and Benzophenone-free UV varnishes for plastic tubes provide additional process benefits to tube makers such as better hot-stamping capability and superior scratch resistance over previous generations.

PPG’s packaging coatings business also offers BPA-NI exterior coatings for aluminum aerosol cans, tubes and bottles.

“PPG performance packaging coatings are backed by decades of industry experience and offer solutions that help customers optimize their processes and address their specific needs,” McMillan said, adding that the new generation of HOBA coatings are now available globally.
