HIGH POINT — The Atrium on Main is getting a facelift.

Bruce Hughes, CEO of upholstery supplier Hughes Furniture, acquired the 221,000-square-foot building at 430 S. Main St. in July for $2.1 million, according to county property records. Hughes said plans are under way to update the building.

"We're going to refresh the overall exterior and common areas and renovate our future showroom space," Hughes said. "For the fall market, we'll be in our current showroom (at 258 S. Main St.). We'll be moving our showroom to the Atrium for the April market."

The Atrium will be open for the fall market, Oct. 19-24, with several exhibitors showing, and Hughes is looking for additional tenants for the building. There is a full-time property manager at the location, allowing tenants year-round access to their showrooms, and new occupants can move in immediately.

"We already have six tenants and we could possibly take on another 10 to 15 tenants depending on their space requirements," Hughes said. "We have on-site parking for our tenants and customers and during market we'll also have private shuttles as well as market shuttles for transportation."

Part of the Atrium property refresh will include adding a restaurant to the building. Hughes said he has spoken to a few prospects and will continue to talk to others.

He also plans to sell or lease Hughes Furniture's existing showroom at 258 S. Main St. Built in 1937, the building was once the High Point courthouse and features distinctive architectural details including Art Deco stair railings, mahogany doors, a paneled judge's chamber and three floors of exhibit space, he said.

"We're doubling our showroom space from 15,000 square feet to about 35,000 square feet," he said. "We're very excited about being able to show more product during market."
